“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Tim 4:7
The apostle Paul knew what it took to step over the finish line. By faith, he entered through the narrow gate. He set his sights on finishing the race and fought the good fight. With his eyes on the prize, he was determined to rest for eternity in the presence of his Savior.
Paul experienced trials that were both mentally and physically draining. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked and endured all types of perils (2 Cor 11:24-28). He knew what it felt like to be bruised and battered. He was all too familiar with the idea of being knocked down, but not knocked out. Satan threw all kinds of situations his way with the hope that he would stay on the ground and let the world plow him into the dirt.
I’ve had those days where it just seems easier to lay flat on my face rather than get up and fight. Satan rejoices when we give up. It gives him pleasure to see us wallow around in our own self-pity. When we give heed to the wiles of the enemy, we make the alternative to heaven an option in our lives. We must remind ourselves that we are fighting for our eternal resting place. At the finish line ahead of us, our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ is reaching for our hand saying, “Just a little further.” The angels are cheering us on as they watch us throw off everything that hinders us, get back up and push for the finish line.
Dear brothers and sisters, we have come too far to ever give up. There is no room for turning back. The battle ground is primed and ready for a fight and victory is already ours. The battle has already been won. If we If we are ever going to be useful for the kingdom, it is time for us to take our eyes off the struggles and place them on the victory. Encouraging others and showing them the finish line is impossible when we are down for the count. We must get up; we must fight and secure our eternal resting place in heaven.
Jesus, I know that each minute, hour and day that passes by represents a move closer toward the end of the race. Help me to get determined and not allow anything to get in my way. Place heavenly blinders over my eyes to see only the path that you created for me and not allow the enemy to taint it. Teach me to encourage others who are struggling to get up and fight. Use me for Your kingdom and Your glory, In Jesus’ Name.
